From the waist level, the hands are raised crosswise in front of the throat (the right hand closer to the body, the left hand forward, palms facing down). While lowering back to the waist, the right hand grasps the left wrist, bringing them down in front of the waist without touching the body. When the hands rise, one strongly says “HAP”, and when lowering, one says “KI”. Outside the training area, Hapkido practitioners may use the same greeting when they want to ask or speak to someone. If the person being asked is their teacher, he or she may respond with the same greeting either sitting or standing. Children should always approach elders with respect, while elders should respond with love and a smile.
